Celebrating American History in February

Bessie Coleman --

a pioneering aviator and the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license. Born in Texas in 1892, she faced discrimination and racism throughout her life but was determined to pursue her dreams of flying. She had to go to France to earn her pilot's license because no American flight schools would accept her due to her race and gender. After returning to the United States, Coleman became a popular stunt pilot, performing at airshows and inspiring many African Americans to pursue careers in aviation. Despite her tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 34, Coleman's legacy lives on as a trailblazer and inspiration for generations of female pilots and people of color.

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom. The observance was first established as "Negro History Week" by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, and later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976. The goal of Black History Month is to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
