Celebrating American History in February
Booker T. Washington --
a prominent African American educator, author, and advisor to several United States presidents. He was born into slavery in Virginia in 1856 and went on to found the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which became a leading educational institution for African Americans. Washington was a strong advocate for vocational education and believed that economic independence was the key to improving the lives of African Americans. He played a significant role in the early civil rights movement, and his ideas continue to influence discussions about race and education in the United States today.
Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom. The observance was first established as "Negro History Week" by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, and later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976. The goal of Black History Month is to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
