Celebrating American History in February

James Brown --

AKA the "Godfather of Soul," was not only a talented American singer, songwriter, and dancer who left a profound impact on music in the 20th century, but he was also a significant figure in the civil rights movement. Using his music and influence, Brown advocated for racial equality and social justice, and his song "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud" became an anthem for the movement. Brown performed at numerous benefit concerts and rallies in support of civil rights causes, and he was a friend and supporter of Martin Luther King Jr., promoting King's message of nonviolent resistance through his platform. Despite some controversies in his personal life, Brown's contributions to the civil rights movement continue to be widely recognized and celebrated.

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom. The observance was first established as "Negro History Week" by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, and later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976. The goal of Black History Month is to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
